EP11: Gen X Parents: Did We Get It Wrong with Our Kids?

In this episode, I discuss how some of us Gen X parents need to take accountability for how we may have gotten it wrong with our parenting and how we may have failed or enabled our children and the importance of setting boundaries with our children without feeling guilty.

I reflect on the independence and resilience of the Gen X generation and how we may have done our children a disservice by trying to be friends in lieu of parents, giving them more than they needed or deserved, wanting to be so understanding and giving them so much freedom and less discipline which is in stark comparison to how we were raised by our paretns.

This may have resulted in a sense of entitlement and a lack of resilience in the younger generation. We see the impacts of always being the safety net for our kids, we didn’t teach them financial responsibility and there are negative consequences of enabling children. We should have been setting boundaries, because contrary to what societs says, boundaries are a loving act that promotes independence, resillence, respect, and appreciation. We made our suffering and struggles look too easy.

10: Processing the Loss of Estranged Parents

Summary

On this very personal episode, I discuss the process of grieving the loss of an already estranged parent. This loss is a complex and emotional process. It is so important to allow yourself to grieve and process the emotions associated with losing a parent that was already gone from your life. It’s a different pain when you have been abandoned by this parent and now they are gone. It’s also important that you find healing and give yourself grace while navigating the loss of an estranged parent. They may have not been with us when we needed them, but I strongly believe they are with us now.

Summary   In this episode of Mum’s True Tea, hosted by Kendall Lasha Williams, the topic of forced forgiveness is explored, particularly its toxic implications in family and societal contexts. Kendall challenges the common belief that forgiveness is a miracle cure for the wronged, arguing instead that it perpetuates cycles of harm and prevents genuine healing. The discussion delves into the pressures mothers face to forgive their children for toxic behavior, examining the unfair expectations and societal norms that invalidate their experiences and feelings. Through personal anecdotes and broader examples, Kendall critiques the idea of forgiveness as an obligatory moral exercise, advocating for freedom and self-care over forced reconciliation. The episode calls for a reevaluation of how forgiveness is approached, emphasizing the importance of supporting victims and allowing individuals to process forgiveness in their own time.   Chapters 00:00 Welcome to Mum’s True Tea Podcast 00:19 The Toxicity of Forced Forgiveness 03:54 The Unfair Expectations on Mothers 06:38 The Cycle of Toxic Forgiveness in Families 08:55 Finding Freedom Over Forgiveness 12:02 Steps Towards Genuine Forgiveness 14:40 Closing Thoughts and Resources

Takeaways

Forced forgiveness can perpetuate toxic cycles and hinder genuine healing. Mothers should not be expected to forgive their children regardless of the harm caused. Forgiveness should be on one’s own time and not forced or rushed. Setting boundaries and finding true resolution are important before forgiving. Each person’s journey to forgiveness is personal and should not be dictated by others.
