EP18: Black Women OPT-OUT! We’re Not Saving Anyone Else

Join me as I discuss the emotional and psychological toll on Black women following the recent election results and how we need to Opt-Out of saving everyone else and heal from savior syndrome. We need to work hard at unraveling the encoding in our DNA that has made us the nurturers of others, learn to prioritize self-care, our mental well-being, and healing over the societal expectation to be saviors. The conversation explores the historical context of Black women’s roles as caregivers and nurturers, the burden of resilience, and the importance of setting boundaries to protect mental health.

Takeaways

We are opting out of being the savior. Black women are often expected to be strong and resilient, which dismisses their struggles. The recent election results have led to feelings of hopelessness among Black women. Self-care is not just about pampering; it’s about true emotional and mental well-being. Black women are dying at alarming rates due to stress and neglect of self-care. Setting boundaries is essential for mental health and well-being. The historical context of Black women’s roles impacts their current mental health. It’s important to recognize who supports us in our lives. We need to stop making excuses for those who don’t show up for us. Prioritizing ourselves is not selfish; it’s necessary.

The conversation emphasizes the importance of healing, accountability, and the need for children to have a safe space to process their emotions without being influenced by either parent. EP13: HELP: Single Moms AINT Safe!

In this eye-opening episode of Mum’s True Tea, I dive deep into the emotional toll that motherhood can take on mental health, including how it can lead to PTSD. I explore the backlash I received for speaking this truth, especially as a single mom. Society often paints motherhood as a joyful experience, but for many, it’s far from the truth. Single moms face intense financial, emotional, and physical burdens, often with little to no support from partners, family, or their community. We discuss the harsh realities of absent fathers and the lack of understanding from those who fail to recognize the struggles single moms endure. Plus, why men who despise single moms often have unresolved issues of their own. Let’s shed light on these tough truths and call for the support and empathy single mothers deserve.

EP12: Managing Motherhood or Is Motherhood Managing You?

In this episode I discuss how managing motherhood is more about moving through it and learning along the way. We don’t really manage mothehood, motherhood manages us. Society often silences the struggles of mothers, but it’s important to have support and express our true feelings about motherhood some days. It’s okay to have regrets and struggles in motherhood. To navigate motherhood, it’s important to let go of mom guilt, remove codependency, and embrace imperfections. Creating space and finding a community for moms who haven’t had a great experience is crucial. Social media often portrays a perfect image of motherhood, but it’s important to show self-compassion and prioritize self-care. Setting boundaries, managing time, and finding a supportive tribe are key to managing motherhood.

EP11: Gen X Parents: Did We Get It Wrong with Our Kids?

In this episode, I discuss how some of us Gen X parents need to take accountability for how we may have gotten it wrong with our parenting and how we may have failed or enabled our children and the importance of setting boundaries with our children without feeling guilty.

I reflect on the independence and resilience of the Gen X generation and how we may have done our children a disservice by trying to be friends in lieu of parents, giving them more than they needed or deserved, wanting to be so understanding and giving them so much freedom and less discipline which is in stark comparison to how we were raised by our paretns.

This may have resulted in a sense of entitlement and a lack of resilience in the younger generation. We see the impacts of always being the safety net for our kids, we didn’t teach them financial responsibility and there are negative consequences of enabling children. We should have been setting boundaries, because contrary to what societs says, boundaries are a loving act that promotes independence, resillence, respect, and appreciation. We made our suffering and struggles look too easy.

10: Processing the Loss of Estranged Parents

Summary

On this very personal episode, I discuss the process of grieving the loss of an already estranged parent. This loss is a complex and emotional process. It is so important to allow yourself to grieve and process the emotions associated with losing a parent that was already gone from your life. It’s a different pain when you have been abandoned by this parent and now they are gone. It’s also important that you find healing and give yourself grace while navigating the loss of an estranged parent. They may have not been with us when we needed them, but I strongly believe they are with us now.
